The only person who could see it up close and lived to tell, though briefly, described him as a skeleton wearing a black coat that covered his face with a mask and appeared and disappeared at will. This elusive and vengeful being secretly made his home in the catacombs of the Paris Opera, built on an underground lake shrouded in mist. But a day came when the Phantom of the Opera began to come out of hiding more than usual after falling in love with a young chorus girl, Christine.
